The year of the 4-cylinder?

Not since the 1.9-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder of the 318 and original Z3 has BMW sold anything less than an inline-6. The 2012 BMW Z4 is changing that.

Complete details of the updated 2012 BMW Z4 aren’t out yet, but expect this 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with what BMW calls TwinPower Turbo technology, to surpass the inline-6 in both performance and efficiency. That technology includes the close-coupled turbocharger, direct injection and Valvetronic.

The last Eclipse

Available in either hardtop Coupe or droptop Spyder, the Eclipse Special Edition starts with a well-equipped GS-Sport model. Exclusive SE details are dark silver 18-in. alloy wheels, black side mirrors and SE badging. The 2.4-liter inline-4 will be the only available engine option as is the 4-speed automatic transmission. Not quite how we envisioned the Eclipse going out…

Does Eminem approve?

The 2012 Chrysler 200 S Convertible is fitted with the 283-bhp 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. The 200 S receives a new grille with black background and Chrysler’s latest winged logo. The headlights also receive a black background, while the mirrors and door handles are body-colored.

The D4-S will mate to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential. While the manual transmission would be our choice, the automatic transmission cars will have shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The Scion FR-S Concept shown at New York was built by Five Axis, a prominent show car and customization house in Southern California.

We doubt the 20-in. wheels, massive 18-in. Carbon-ceramic disk brakes, and 4-piston calipers will make it into production.

The flat-4 engine is up front, and is shared with Subaru. The engine, dubbed D4-S, will sport two injectors per cylinder, just like on some Lexus products. One will inject directly in the combustion chamber, while the other will spray into the intake runner, above the valve, just like in the pre-direct injection days.

There is permanent 4-wheel drive (Quadra-Trac, in Jeep speak), a 5-speed automatic, and a tow rating of 5000 lb.
