Inside, gone is the playful instrument design, replaced with a more traditional styling theme. Optional for the first time in the VW Beetle is navigation, and a premium Fender audio system.
Just unveiled ahead of the 2011 New York Auto Show, the longer, wider and lower new Volkswagen Beetle is meant to “appeal to a broader audience worldwide.”
Italdesign Giugiaro will display eleven vintage models at this year’s Techno Classica Essen.
Included are a triumvirate of VW models, such as the first-generation Passat (1973), Golf (1974) and Scirocco (1974). Also on display are a Seat Ibiza (1984), Audi 80 (1978), Lamborghini Gallardo (2002), and the still stunningly gorgeous Volkswagen W12 Nardò prototype (2001).
Do these selections fairly represent the show’s theme of “automotive milestones”?
As the most powerful model ever offered by Volkswagen, the 2012 VW Golf R will appeal to owners of the previous Golf R32 and bring new visibility to the R line of performance vehicles.
The ItalDesign Giugiaro Volkswagen Tex is a stylish 2-door that rides on the new front-engine, front-drive platform developed for the next-generation Audi A3.
Europeans like SUVs too—provided they’re handsome, practical and not obscenely oversize.
In the U.S., the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan will get the 2.0-liter TSI gasoline turbo 4-cylinder, which produces 210 bhp.
The Volkswagen Bulli Concept has an Apple iPad mounted in the center console, which also serves as a multi-functional touch-screen for vehicle controls. The system provides on-board navigation and hands-free, Bluetooth cell phone connectivity.
A Microbus by any other name.
Although it is inspired by a nostalgic design, the Volkswagen Bulli Concept is truly state-of-the-art.
Unlike the original T1, which was powered by a rear-mounted flat-4, the VW Bulli concept features its engine (or electric motor) up front, where it will drive the front wheels. Also, the compact size means that the Bulli comes equipped with only two rows of seats.
The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet returns to the market after a six year absence. At this time VW says the 2012 Golf Cabriolet will not go on sale in the U.S.
Although the engine is in the wrong place (the front), this new Volkswagen Microbus looks fantastic, modern while at the same time having the same basic silhouette and seating arrangement as the original.
A personal plea to VW: Build this new Microbus!
